WhatsApp doesn’t issue a direct notification if someone blocks you on the messaging app. If their profile picture or last seen status is no longer visible, you likely got blocked on WhatsApp. Additionally, if your messages show only a single tick or if you can’t add them to a group, it confirms your suspicions.
If someone blocks you on WhatsApp, it can be mentally distressing. You’re likely wondering how to know if someone blocked you since WhatsApp doesn’t give direct notifications. I’ve been there. However, there are clear signs that someone has blocked you on the platform. Let’s explore them!
1. Canโt See Their Profile Picture
If someone’s WhatsApp profile picture suddenly becomes invisible, and it appears blank, it’s likely they’ve blocked you. Occasionally, it may take some time for the block to be reflected on your end after someone blocks you on WhatsApp.
During my testing, I found that I needed to tap open the profile picture of the contact who blocked me on WhatsApp to make it appear blank. Otherwise, I could still see their current profile picture. Additionally, I had to open and close WhatsApp a few times for the ‘no profile picture’ state to become evident. Just a heads up.
2. Last Seen is Not Visible
Once you observe the disappearance of a WhatsApp contact’s profile picture, the next step is to verify if their ‘last seen’ or ‘online’ status remains visible. If either you or that specific WhatsApp contact has their last seen privacy setting set to ‘Nobody,’ you won’t be able to view their last seen regardless.
However, if this WhatsApp contact’s last seen status was previously visible to you, and now it’s no longer visible, it could be an indication that they have blocked you on the platform.
To verify this, there’s another action you can take, leading us to the next section.
3. Single Tick on Sent Messages
To validate your assumptions, the most effective method is to send a text to the WhatsApp contact you suspect has blocked you. If you send a message and notice only a single tick, the likelihood of being blocked by this contact on WhatsApp increases.
This indicates that the message has been successfully sent from your phone but has not been “delivered” to the recipient.
When blocked, all messages sent to this person will remain single-ticked. Even if they unblock you later, messages sent during the block won’t be delivered, as evident in the screenshot above.
Additionally, if the other person has disabled their data or switched off their phone, your messages will also display a single tick. Therefore, it’s essential to be patient before jumping to the conclusion that you are blocked.
4. Failed to Call them
Another method to determine if someone has blocked you on WhatsApp is by placing a call. When not blocked, a call will display the “Ringing” text on the calling screen. However, if you’re blocked, the text on the calling screen will remain as “Calling” and won’t switch to “Ringing.”
Yet, if the individual you suspect of blocking you is in an area without data connectivity, your calls won’t connect in that scenario either.
5. Canโt Add Them to Groups
Lastly, attempt to add the contact you suspect has blocked you to a group chat. If you encounter the message “Couldn’t add [WhatsApp contact],” it confirms that you have indeed been blocked by this person.
This is the final step to take after examining all the aforementioned indicators. You can now find reassurance (or not) in the knowledge that this person has genuinely blocked you on WhatsApp.
This concludes the guide, and I trust it proved helpful for you. However, once someone blocks you on WhatsApp, there’s nothing you can do to unblock yourself.
