SK Hynix and Samsung to Present on GDDR7 Memory at ISSCC 2024 in February. Samsung notes GDDR7’s use in workstations, PCs, and game consoles, but adoption timelines remain undisclosed. Micron’s roadmaps hint at potential GDDR7 adoption around 2026, with more updates expected later.
Samsung Electronics, a trailblazer in semiconductors, is poised to unveil GDDR7 memory at the 2024 ISSCC. Additionally, SK Hynix will feature GDDR7 at the IEEE-sponsored conference.
This conference takes place in San Francisco in February. Nvidia and AMD, major chip manufacturers, are anticipated to incorporate GDDR7 in upcoming graphics cards, providing substantial improvements over prior memory architectures.
As per the ISSCC 2024 schedule, Samsung’s session is set for February 20th at 10:30 AM, while SK Hynix has a slot at 8:00 AM. Both companies are poised to reveal their cutting-edge graphics memory technology.
GDDR, or Graphics Double Data Rate, is designed to enhance graphics processing. Micron-based GDDR7 is anticipated around 2026, likely sparking discussions on its adoption in consumer products. Samsung and SK Hynix’s latest graphics memory modules represent a significant advancement. Future developments may include even faster memory options, potentially introducing technologies like GDDR7X.
In 2023, Samsung announced the successful development of Graphics Double Data Rate 7 DRAM. GDDR7 boasts significantly higher bandwidth, approximately 1.4 times that of GDDR6.
The utilization of this latest graphics memory standard in GPU generations remains uncertain. Although expectations are elevated, upcoming GPUs from major chipmakers like the (RTX 50 series) may not immediately adopt GDDR7. However, it’s anticipated that the subsequent generation will prominently feature GDDR7.
The upcoming GDDR7 memory boasts enhanced efficiency, providing a 20% reduction in power consumption compared to its predecessor, GDDR6. Laptops will benefit from GDDR7’s lower operating voltage.
