How to Upgrade Your Laptop’s RAM
If your laptop includes an additional RAM slot, you can effortlessly expand its current RAM capacity. After obtaining compatible RAM, power off your laptop and disconnect all peripherals, including the power cord. Next, follow the steps below to install RAM in your laptop and finish the upgrade.
- Place your laptop upside down on a soft surface. Use a screwdriver to gently remove all screws.
- Insert a card or thin plastic tool into the opening and cautiously pop the back cover off.
- Find the vacant RAM slot, typically positioned below or next to the existing RAM.
- Insert the new RAM at an angle to install RAM, aligning the notch with the slot, and push it fully into place.
Push the new RAM down until the side clips snap into place. Reattach the back cover, ensuring it sits flush with the laptop. Secure the screws, flip the laptop upright, and you’re all set.

How to Verify if Your Laptop’s RAM Upgrade Was Successful
After completing the RAM upgrade, use Task Manager to confirm that the new RAM is working. This will ensure your upgrade was successful and that the new RAM is active. Here’s how:
- Open Task Manager, navigate to the Performance tab, and select Memory.
- Check the available RAM and see how many slots are currently in use.
If you’ve added additional RAM to your existing setup, it should display as 2 of 2 or 2 of 4, depending on the number of available slots.
