WhatsApp plans to add the option to designate preferred contacts, positioning them at the top of the calls tab. The recent beta version 24.3.10.70 for WhatsApp on iOS provides a glimpse of the preferred contacts screen. This enhancement aims to simplify the process for users when making calls to individuals they regularly communicate with on the app.
With each update, WhatsApp introduces new elements to its existing array of features. This time, the voice calling function is undergoing an enhancement. Recognizing calling as a fundamental aspect of the messaging service, WhatsApp is experimenting with the ability to designate specific contacts as favorites. This feature will enable you to connect with them in just one tap, eliminating the need to navigate through the contacts list.
According to the latest report from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp beta version #24.3.10.70 for iOS suggests that soon, the app will allow you to designate contacts as favorites. As illustrated in the screenshot below, you can locate contacts and include them in your favorites list. These contacts will likely appear at the top of the Calls tab, allowing you to initiate a call with a simple tap on their name.
I anticipate that this functionality will operate in a manner similar to how you can pin specific chats. Pinned contacts consistently show up at the top of the Chats tab. Presently, the Calls tab solely presents a history of calls made and received within the app. To initiate a call, you need to scroll through the log to locate the number or visit the person’s profile. The inclusion of the ‘favorites’ feature will streamline this process.

Nevertheless, this feature is currently in the initial phases of development and is not yet available for testing, even in beta versions. Consequently, there’s no precise release timeframe, but it is expected to roll out to all stable users in the near future. Despite not making many calls on WhatsApp myself, I recognize its potential usefulness for various users, particularly the older audience who may find app navigation challenging.
