Meta has rolled out AI capabilities across Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, and Messenger. This update alters the search bars in Facebook and Instagram, while Messenger and WhatsApp now include chatbots. However, users currently lack the option to disable Meta AI within the app settings. Nevertheless, there are alternative methods to circumvent Meta AI, such as blocking the Meta AI profile or reverting to previous app versions.
You can’t directly switch off Meta AI within the apps
Absolutely, you got it. Meta has been presenting itself as a user-focused company, promoting its open-source AI models. Yet, the inability to deactivate unwanted features appears contradictory. Although my quest for a disabling option for Meta AI yielded no results, I can propose a few alternative solutions.
Method 1: Block Meta AI profile on Instagram and Facebook
This approach has proven effective for many users, as reported on platforms such as Reddit. Simply locate and access the Meta AI profile on Instagram and Facebook, then proceed to block it. This action restores the search bar to its regular functionality.
Yet, it’s important to note that Meta AI operates as a chatbot within WhatsApp and Messenger, where blocking it isn’t possible.
For Facebook: Use the search bar to find Meta AI. Access the account, tap the three dots, and select “Block.”
On Instagram: Employ the search bar to locate Meta AI. Access the account, tap the three dots, and select “Block.”
Regrettably, Meta has released an update that may render this workaround ineffective for some users. In such cases, you can attempt the following alternative method.

Method 2: Downgrade the application version
Installing a version of the application predating the launch of Meta AI can resolve the issue. Uninstall Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp, or Messenger, then download an older version from a third-party source.
Note: This method only applies to Android devices. It’s not possible to install applications from external sources on iPhones.
- Begin by uninstalling Facebook or Instagram. Visit APKMirror and locate an older version of the Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, or Messenger app.
(Caution: Uninstalling WhatsApp will result in the deletion of your chats. Proceed only if you have a backup.)
- Meta AI debuted on April 18. Ensure you download an APK file dated before its launch. Avoid files labeled ‘alpha’ or ‘beta’. Choose an APK file from the list and tap on “Download APK.”
- After downloading the file, open it and tap on Settings. Then, enable the toggle for “Allow from this source.” Proceed to open the app and sign in. You should now see a search bar without Meta AI.
Bonus Tip: Disable automatic app updates
Not all users have received the update introducing Meta AI. If you prefer to keep it that way, preventing app updates is crucial. Here’s how to disable automatic updates on both iPhone and Android devices:
Android Users:
- Open the Google Play Store app.
- Tap on the three dots icon and uncheck the box for “Enable Auto Updates.”
iPhone Users:
- Navigate to Settings > App Store.
- Disable the toggles for “App Downloads,” “App Updates,” and “Automatic Downloads” on cellular data.
Note: Auto-updates for individual apps cannot be disabled on iOS.
