Video games have explored nearly every genre imaginable, including the world of wrestling. While WWE games initially offered an arcade-style experience, recent iterations leaned towards simulation. However, with the release of WWE 2K24, 2K has revitalized the franchise after two years of development and feedback. As a long-time player of WWE games, I eagerly dove into the latest installment to continue my journey. Thanks to a copy provided by 2K, I’ve spent countless hours in the wrestling ring, forging my own path. After extensive gameplay, here’s my take on 2K’s latest entry in the annual WWE series.
Visuals, Experience & Music: Dive into Excellence
Every time I fire up a game, the visuals and music set the tone for my experience. When I launched WWE, the UI immediately caught my eye with its sleek design. Though not quite as iconic as SVR 2011, the 2K24 menu stands out as the cleanest in the 2K series.
The Superstars are presented crisply, their colors vibrant and attention-grabbing. Plus, the inclusion of multiple narrations from WWE favorites enhances the immersion. Features like The Bump, integrated into the game, further elevate the WWE experience.
The game’s AI operates flawlessly, seamlessly syncing with the animations. From interactions to weapon mechanics, even to the audience chanting enthusiastically, it creates an authentic WWE arena atmosphere.
However, the background tracks fall a bit short. The song selection is decent at best, leading me to often lower the music volume and opt for classic theme songs instead. It’s a letdown considering WWE’s history of featuring outstanding tracks.
Despite higher expectations with Post Malone as the executive soundtrack producer, we make do with what’s available.
Gameplay: Glide like a Butterfly, Sting like a Bee
In the early 2K WWE games, I found the gameplay somewhat sluggish, with a lack of certain pro-wrestling maneuvers. However, in 2K24, the gameplay is smooth and free of any choppiness. Notably, there’s a significant improvement in selling, with Superstars reacting naturally after taking a hit. This enhances the theatricality of the game, which I particularly enjoy.
The game elevates the in-ring excitement with numerous gameplay enhancements over its predecessor, 2K23. One notable addition is the introduction of Super Finishers, offering players the freedom to conclude a match as they see fit. This feature adds an extra layer of excitement to the already visually stunning Signature and Finisher sequences.
However, it’s worth noting that Super Finishers are not accessible for all Superstars in the game. Additionally, 2K24 introduces a new mini-game called Trading Blows and the capability to execute top rope dives to take out multiple opponents outside the ring. These additions further enhance the gameplay experience.
In a bid to enhance gameplay variety, 2K24 introduces Double-title matches and introduces new Paybacks. Additionally, the weapon system receives a substantial upgrade, offering a plethora of new items like trash cans, guitars, and microphones to wreak havoc. What’s more, players can now throw these items at their opponents, intensifying the action.
To further heighten the authenticity, the game features seven real WWE referees, providing a truly immersive experience.
New Game Modes: Embrace Evolution for Ultimate Entertainment
Referees play a pivotal role in WWE matches, and it’s hard to overlook the inclusion of Special Guest referees in the game. After nearly a decade of fans clamoring for this feature, 2K has finally delivered. The new Special Guest referee mode not only enables players to assume the role of a referee but also allows them to assign one for their matches. You’ll witness these referees actively participating in the match, adding an authentic WWE feel to the gameplay.
In addition to trying out the Guest referee mode, I also delved into the Casket and Ambulance modes. While from a gaming standpoint, they might seem like simple button-mashing affairs, as a longtime WWE fan, these modes added an extra layer of excitement to my experience. With the new gameplay adjustments, players can now orchestrate their dream matches and enjoy a plethora of unique finishes.
Furthermore, 2K has introduced a new Gauntlet mode accommodating up to 30 participants. These modes complement the already diverse array of match types, including WarGames, Extreme Rules, TLC, Submission, Hell in a Cell, and numerous other iconic formats. However, I would appreciate it if 2K included additional methods for closing the Casket or Ambulance doors. Perhaps even allowing players to smash through the roof of the Ambulance could add an extra thrill to the gameplay.
However, one game mode that truly stands out is the Forty Years of WrestleMania Edition. If you’re a fan of WWE and its most iconic event, WrestleMania, then this showcase mode is an absolute must-play. It allows players to immerse themselves in the legendary matches, relive the rivalries, and delve into the rich history of WWE.
Using a seamless slingshot technique, 2K transports players directly from video footage to the heart of the match, ensuring a seamless experience. What truly sets this mode apart, in my opinion, is Corey Graves’ narration and his insights into the behind-the-scenes details of these historic WrestleMania matches. This showcase stands as my personal favorite among all the 2K showcases in previous years.
Revamped Classic Game Modes: Infusing Old with New Excitement
Now, let’s delve into the revamped classic 2K special game modes, which have been enhanced and offer a more enjoyable experience. The career mode, MyRISE Undisputed, and Unleashed are particularly engaging. Notably, renowned Superstars like Roman Reigns and Cody Rhodes have lent their voices to the characters, adding authenticity to the narratives.
The stories feel rejuvenated, although I did encounter some unnecessary prompts along the way. One highlight for me was William Regal’s unexpected yet pivotal role in both narratives. It’s worth completing these modes to unlock some cool rewards, including quirky moves for your character’s arsenal.
For enthusiasts of the MyGM game mode, the bookfest has undergone significant enhancements. More brands are now involved, and you’ll encounter new General Managers boasting unique perks. Take your time crafting diverse match types, scouting talent, and orchestrating superstar trades between brands.
Additionally, you can manage superstar contracts and assist them in earning XP to ascend the ranks and become the top superstar in the industry. MyFACTION introduces four distinct currencies: MyFACTION points, MyFACTION tokens, Virtual currency, and Store tokens. The card-building game has been refined and now features online matchmaking with a seasonal leaderboard.
Faction wars have been overhauled, featuring more real-world 4v4 factions and a reward shop, which I find appealing.
Universe and Creation: Shape Your Own Narrative
The Universe mode in WWE 2K24 retains its versatility, allowing players to manage the entire WWE landscape or focus on individual wrestlers’ journeys. While this year’s iteration largely resembles the previous one, there are some new features like loser-leaves-town matches and run-ins that add a touch of variety.
Despite the solid existing framework, the absence of features such as in-game promos between rivals leaves room for improvement. There’s still potential for 2K to enhance the Universe mode, given its popularity as a sandbox experience for WWE fans. After all, who doesn’t want to create their own story?
Now, let’s shift our focus to the community aspect. The 2K creation suite has always been integral to the WWE games community. Community creations enhance the game by introducing new Superstars, arenas, GMs, championship belts, entrances, moves, and much more.
This year, Create-A-Referee and Create-A-Sign join the creation suite, expanding the possibilities for community creativity. Furthermore, additional animations and new parts have been incorporated to facilitate the creation of even more memorable content. However, it’s worth noting that some transitions in the entrance creation may appear slightly out of sync.
Roster & Ratings: Embracing WWE’s Golden Era
Before reaching a verdict, it’s essential to acknowledge the commendable roster efforts by 2K. While some in-game characters may have blurry faces, often due to contractual or other disputes, the overall roster remains impressively robust.
Building upon an already formidable lineup of current-generation Superstars, 2K has incorporated all the legends from the WrestleMania showcases. Furthermore, many Superstars have multiple editions, adding depth to the roster. Personally, I’m fond of the Stardust version of Cody Rhodes. It’s a testament to 2K’s commitment to delivering a diverse and exciting roster.
I do have some reservations about certain ratings. Superstars like Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods are assigned below-average ratings, which seems unjustified. However, it’s important to note that this doesn’t necessarily reflect 2K’s opinion of these Superstars’ abilities. With real-world developments, 2K can adjust these ratings through patch updates at any time.
WWE 2K24: Graphics and Performance
It’s time to discuss the in-game performance. Having played WWE games on various consoles and custom PC setups, I must say that WWE 2K24 is the first game where I didn’t need to tweak a single setting.
2K has ensured that the gameplay is optimized regardless of the device you’re using. I experienced minimal to no stuttering, even when playing at the highest settings. For my testbench, I played WWE 2K24 on a machine with the following specs:
Test PC:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600
GPU: NVIDIA GTX 1650 Super
RAM: 8×2 DDR4 RAM @ 3600MHz
SSD: Adata XPG m.2 512GB
Monitor: 1080p
When I initially launched the game, the CPU’s maximum temperature peaked at 60 degrees Celsius. This remained consistent until I entered an online match, where it hovered below 65 degrees Celsius. These figures demonstrate the exceptional optimization of WWE 2K24 for the current system.
In contrast, WWE 2K22 would push my CPU to temperatures of 75-80 degrees Celsius even in an idle state. Throughout my gameplay experience, my GPU maintained a maximum temperature of 70 degrees Celsius. Despite engaging in various match types, the game consistently delivered a solid experience with frame rates ranging from 56 to 60 FPS.
This impressive level of optimization, coupled with no compromises in graphics and performance, solidifies WWE 2K24 as a standout title suitable for any gaming device.
Verdict: Does WWE 2K24 King in the Wrestling Gaming Realm?
Since the arrival of 2K22, WWE games have been steadily gaining momentum. Fortunately, the company recognized the significance of prioritizing quality over quantity, and the developers took the time to genuinely heed the community’s feedback.
While I maintain reservations about aspects such as the music, ratings, and the Universe mode, these shortcomings are overshadowed by the multitude of impressive features.
It’s important to acknowledge that WWE 2K24 is still part of the yearly iteration cycle. So, if you’re anticipating a completely new game, you might be disappointed. However, 2K24 offers a solid array of features and much-needed improvements.
As someone who has been immersed in this legacy for quite some time, I can confidently say that WWE 2K24 represents 2K’s finest work yet. In my experience, it stands as the best WWE game I’ve played in a simulation setup.
I highly recommend opting for the WrestleMania Edition, as it offers a nostalgic experience with old classics. Nevertheless, even if you opt for the standard edition, wrestling enthusiasts will find WWE 2K24 well worth stepping into the ring for
WWE 2K24 places a significant emphasis on storytelling this year, offering thrilling experiences such as the new 40 Years of WrestleMania showcase mode and two captivating MyRISE stories. The game sees substantial improvements in visuals, gameplay, and AI, providing an immersive experience. Standout game modes like Special Guest Referee, Casket mode, Gauntlet match, and Ambulance match leave a lasting impact.
However, areas such as Music and the Universe mode fall short of expectations. Nonetheless, WWE 2K24 remains a solid and compelling game that pays homage to its rich legacy, delivering an experience worthy of wrestling fans' attention.
