A Slack Channel gathers all your peers into one group. You can create both public and private channels based on how you want to share information. Additionally, you have the ability to remove someone from a Slack Channel if necessary.
For instance, you may want to remove someone from your Slack channel if they leave your enterprise. Similarly, you may want to reshuffle the teams and in doing so, remove some peeps from a particular Slack Channel. This post shares the steps to do the same on your mobile and desktop.
Remove Someone from Slack Channel on Mobile
The Slack app is accessible for mobile users, allowing you to stay updated on team activities with notifications sent directly to your phone. You can create and manage Slack Channels using the mobile app on your iPhone or Android device, including removing members when necessary. Before proceeding, ensure you have the latest app version installed. Additionally, note that only the Slack Channel Manager can remove members.
- Launch the Slack app on your iPhone or Android device.
- In the message field located at the bottom, type the following command.
/remove @(Slack Channel Member Name)
- Tap the “Send Message” icon located at the bottom right corner to execute the command.
Once you’ve executed the command, the chosen member will be removed from the Slack Channel. You can repeat the same process to remove additional members as needed.

Remove Someone from Slack Channel on Desktop
Here are the steps for Desktop users, applicable to both Mac and Windows versions of the Slack app. Ensure you’re using the latest version of the app to avoid any issues while following these steps.
- Open Slack on your Mac or Windows PC.
- Select your Slack Channel from the left menu.
- Click the member icon cluster at the top-right corner of the chat window.
- Hover the mouse pointer over the name of the member you wish to remove.
- Click the more options icon next to the member’s name.
- Select “Remove From Channel.”
- Click on “Remove” again to confirm.
Alternatively, you can utilize the same steps as outlined for the mobile app.
- In your Slack Channel window, type the following command.
/remove @(Slack Channel Member Name)
- Click the Send icon.
Your selected member will be removed from the Slack Channel.
Note: It’s impossible to remove someone from a Slack Channel without notifying them, as the Slack Bot will inform the member.

Make Someone Channel Manager on Slack
As a channel manager, you have the authority to designate any other member of the channel as a manager. This is similar to changing the admin of a WhatsApp group. Once you grant Channel Manager rights to someone, that member gains control over all functions, including deleting the Slack channel. Note that you can only make someone a channel manager using the Slack desktop app.
- Open Slack on your Mac or Windows PC.
- Select your Slack Channel and click the member icon cluster at the top-right corner of the chat window.
- Hover the mouse pointer over the member’s name whom you wish to promote.
- Click the more options icon next to the member’s name.
- Select “Make Channel Manager.”
Remove Yourself as Slack Channel Manager
You also have the option to remove yourself as the Slack Channel Manager, although this feature is limited to Desktop users. If you proceed with the steps outlined below, you’ll need to request the new channel manager to reinstate your channel manager privileges. Additionally, all your current channel manager privileges will be revoked.
- Open the Slack app and select your channel name.
- Click the member icon cluster at the top-right corner of the chat window.
- Click the More Options icon next to your name. Then select ‘Remove From Channel Managers.’
- Click on ‘Remove From Channel Managers’ again to confirm.
