Microsoft appears eager to introduce ads in the Start menu of Windows 11. The company has released an April 2024 optional update (KB5036980) for Windows 11, bringing “some of the great apps that are available” on the Microsoft Store from “a small set of curated developers.” Essentially, these are Start Menu Ads that will appear under the Recommended section.
The update is applicable to Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2, but it remains an optional update. Opting to delay the update will result in automatic installation in May. Although the choice to display ads in the Start Menu has received criticism from users, there is a straightforward method to disable promotional ads in the Start Menu. Here’s how:

Disable Start Menu Ads on Windows 11
- Press “Windows + I” to open Windows Settings.
- Navigate to “Personalization” and then click on “Start”.
- Disable the toggle next to “Show recommendations for tips, app promotions, and more”.
- You’re all set! Ads will no longer appear in the Windows 11 Start Menu.
Additionally, you can select the “More pins” layout to decrease the space taken by the Recommended section and pin more apps in the Start Menu.
